Taonga: The Island Farm Overview

Taonga drops you on a tropical island with a letter from your uncle and not much else. You plant crops, keep animals, and sail off to other islands to clear the jungle and see what’s under it.

Energy is what all of it costs, and it’s the thing you run out of first. Volka gives some away on its own news page, and our Taonga free energy page covers where those gifts show up and how long you get to claim them.

Below that, what the game is, where it runs, and how the islands open up.

Each gift post names its own deadline. Have Taonga open in another tab before you start.

What the game is

Volka calls it a stress-free farming game, and that's a fair description. Nothing attacks your farm and you can't lose, so it moves at whatever pace you feel like.

The farm is only half of it though. The other half is sailing to other islands, clearing the jungle that's grown over them, and working through a story on each one.

On the farm itself you grow wheat, fruit and vegetables, keep chickens and cows, and fish at the beach. Workshops like the kitchen, windmill and carpenter turn all of that into something more useful.

Where you play it

Taonga started as a browser game and that's still where most people play it. You open taongafarm.com and you're in. There's nothing to download, and Volka says it works on a Chromebook too.

There's an Android version as well, listed as Taonga Island Adventure: Farm. It's passed a million downloads and sits at 4.4 stars.

No iPhone version. There's no App Store listing at all. Searching for Taonga there turns up other farming games instead, so don't install one of those by mistake.

You can sign up with one click or connect through Facebook. It's worth adding an email either way, because that's what unlocks the Seaside Castle and the newsletter gifts.

How a session goes

  1. Check your farm. Harvest what's ready, feed the animals, and put the workshops back to work.

  2. Fill your yacht. Loading and sending it pays coins, and from level 16 it can pay a florin as well.

  3. Sail somewhere. Pick an island, clear what's in the way, and work on its tasks.

  4. Visit a few neighbors. Their wellness spots hand you energy back, which is what buys you a longer session.

When the energy bar empties, that's usually your session done. Nothing spoils while you're gone, so leaving it a day costs you nothing.

Strike counts matter. You can chop at an object once, three times or five times per click. Volka says anything up to four strikes gives you loose items you can use on the spot, while five or more packs them into crates you have to carry home and unpack.

The islands and when they open

Volka documents 20 adventure islands in its help center, and each one opens at a set level. You reach them by boat from your home island.

On top of those there are islands that come and go. Volka opens a new one every few weeks, announces it on its news page with a closing date, and then it's gone.

Those temporary islands are worth catching, because they usually carry something you can't get otherwise. Two of the permanent ones pay out in a way that matters long after you finish them: the Radiant Lotus keeps producing energy, and Treacherous Reefs hands you Captain Escudo's chest.

Why energy runs the game

Every swing of an axe, every plowed plot and every rock you break costs energy. Coins pile up on their own, but energy is what decides how much you get done today.

Your cap grows as you level up. Volka lists the levels that add a point, starting at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10, and VIP levels raise it further.

Volka publishes a long list of ways to collect more, and our free energy page goes through all of them, including the one building you get just for filling in your profile.

Coins, diamonds and florins

Three currencies, and they do different jobs.

  • Coins. The everyday one. You earn them trading and spend them on buildings, plots and decorations.

  • Diamonds. The premium one. They speed things up, buy energy, and open extra farm plots.

  • Florins. The rare one. There are Emerald, Sapphire and Amethyst florins plus a rare Solar Florin, and they can't be sold, gifted or swapped between neighbors.

Florins turn up in chests on the Pirate Cove, the Oracles, the Lagoon and the Wandering Islands of Florins. You can also get one from a fully loaded yacht once you've restored the Pier at level 16.

There's a fourth thing that isn't really a currency: sand dollars. You pick them up from island rewards and spend them at the wheel of fortune prize kiosk, and buying energy there is what most players use them for.

Neighbors and competitions

You can have up to 50 neighbors, and raising your VIP level lifts that cap. They're the closest thing Taonga has to a multiplayer mode.

Neighbors visit each other's wellness spots, send free gifts and parcels, and help fill each other's yacht orders. Volka runs an official Add Me group on Facebook for players looking to find some.

There are four competitions running all the time, for hospitality, fishing, butterfly catching and the Pyramid, plus extra ones during festivals. Everyone who hits the minimum score gets paid, and the tokens go in the Rewards Shop.

Common questions

Is Taonga free to play?

Yes. Volka answered this directly in a reply to a Play review, saying all the resources can be obtained through gameplay and that the same applies to energy.

Can I play Taonga on an iPhone or iPad?

No. There's no App Store version. It runs in a web browser on any computer, and there's an Android app on Google Play.

How many islands are there?

Volka's help center documents 20 adventure islands, opening between level 7 and level 28, plus temporary ones that come and go through the year.

Do I need Facebook to play?

No. You can connect through Facebook if you want, but you can also sign up on taongafarm.com with an email and a password.

What happens if I stop playing for a week?

Nothing is lost. Crops sit there and animals don't starve, so it's safe to leave for as long as you like.

Why can't I get to an island I can see?

Most islands have a level requirement, and some also need a quest finished first. The Oracles, for example, doesn't open until level 24.
