What Crazy Fox is

Strip it back and it's a slot machine bolted to a building game. Spin, take what you land on, spend the coins on the next piece of your village. Astak calls the whole thing a spin, raid and build adventure, which is about right.

The sessions are meant to be short. You open it, burn through the spins you've banked, put up a building or two, and shut it again. There's no long run of play to sit through, so it fits into odd minutes.

You do need to be online. Astak says an internet connection is required, and the spinning, the raiding and the events all run on their servers rather than on your phone.

How the reels work

Spins are the thing you run out of. Everything else in Crazy Fox sits downstream of having one left, which is why players spend so much time chasing more.

Each spin drops onto one of a handful of results. Coins are the usual one. The rest either point you at another player or keep another player off you.

None of it is steerable, and that's worth knowing going in. You pick when to spin and what to build with the proceeds. The reels decide the rest.

Raids, attacks and shields

This is the half that makes Crazy Fox social. Other players come after your coins exactly the way you go after theirs, and none of it plays out live. It resolves whether you're in the app or asleep.

Shields are the answer. One shield eats one attack, and Astak's own pitch tells you to spin for coins and shields in the same breath, which tells you how central they are.

There's a friendlier side to it too. Astak lets you trade cards, send gifts and team up for co-op events, so the same friends list that feeds the raiding also feeds the gifting.

Villages, cards and pets

The coins have to go somewhere, and that somewhere is the map. Astak advertises over 600 villages, running from candy kingdoms to jungle hideouts, and you unlock them by building and upgrading your way forward.

Cards run alongside it as the collecting layer. You hunt rare ones, finish themed albums, and trade the spares with friends. Finishing a set is the point, and it's where a lot of the bigger rewards live.

Pets come out of the same system. Astak says they boost your rewards and your defense as you climb, so they're a permanent leg-up rather than a one-off prize.

The age rules don't agree

Read this bit properly, because the three sources you'd normally trust all say something different, and the strictest one is the easiest to miss.

That line sits at the bottom of Astak's own description on both stores, and it's stricter than either store's badge. Apple rates the game 17+ and tags it for loot boxes and for frequent, intense simulated gambling. Google rates the same game Teen with a simulated gambling tag.

When the people who built it are stricter than the shops selling it, go with the people who built it. Treat Crazy Fox as an adult game.

What it costs

Free to download on both stores, and you can keep playing without spending. Astak says the in-app purchases are optional, and plenty of people never touch them.

The ceiling is higher than most though, and it's worth seeing before you hand a phone to anyone else. Google Play lists in-app purchases at $0.99 to $399.99 per item.

Play also flags the app as carrying ads and tags its purchases as including random items. Apple says the same thing in different words with its loot box label: some of what you buy pays out at random rather than handing you the thing you picked.
